– Scripture: Luke 16:19-31
Thoughts on the Word: Our text for this Sunday, from Luke 16:19-31, may seem like a difficult text from which to preach a message on peace upon first reading. This weeks emphasis is on building blocks for peace. The story of the poor man, Lazarus, and the rich man, Dives(not specific in the text), shows the injustice of our world that leads to violence in many parts of the world including our own country. In light of the events in Charlotte North Carolina and other places in our country and around the world this past week, Christians need to proclaim the message of God’s love and peace and recognize that it can be proclaimed from just about any text of the New Testament. Please continue to pray and seek ways to share the message of peace in your homes, places of work, schools, anywhere you go. Jesus is the prince of peace. Amen.

OCTOBER 2, 2016 ~ COMBINED SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS ON OCTOBER 2 – David Stauffer, a member of the Mission and Ministry Board of the Church of the Brethren, will be presenting “The Church of the Brethren at Work” during a combined Sunday Class at
9:00 AM on October 2. He will be talking about the variety of ministries, projects, and programs of the Church of the Brethren. David will also be preaching on October 2 about the unity and purpose of the church. His sermon is based upon Ephesians 4:1-16 and is entitled
“In Mission Together.” David will be joining us for Love Feast as well.
OCTOBER 2, 2016 ~ Life Chain, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2-3pm along Market St. at Home Depot. Come stand/sit and pray for babies in the womb.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! First Church is truly blessed! I believe our congregation appreciated the variety of vocalists and instrumentalists this summer just ended. There were vocal solos and duets, a singer with guitar accompaniment, brass with piano accompaniment, violin, and piano. And of course, many were backed up by our very capable keyboardist, Mike Baldwin. Greg Bachman also accompanied a duet. We had the opportunity to share the musical renditions of Ann and Brian Moul, Emma Stoolmaker, Jay Gibble and Lisa Mattia, Ben Detrick, Keith Grimm, Jackie LeGrand and Hannah Taylor, Caroline Wolfe, Cathy Carson, Julie Poland and Morgan Orndorff. Thank you! Thank you for sharing your talents with our First Church congregation. And thanks to whoever made all of the arrangements! – Larry Gibble – from the back pew in the sanctuary.

York First Church of the Brethren ~ Fall Spiritual Retreat ~ October 28 – 30, 2016 -Mission statement: People dedicated to Spiritual Growth, Loving Relationships and Sacrificial Service
The theme for the Fall 2016 York First Church of the Brethren Retreat is “Roots and Branches: Building Better Relationships”. In these days of Facebook, tweets and text messages real, personal relationships can become few and far between. Our church’s mission statement above stresses the importance of “loving relationships”. What a great time to work on building your relationships during a fall weekend at Camp Eder. The time spent in Retreat will include worship, prayer, interactive presentations, breakout sessions, fun and fellowship. The Spiritual Enrichment Team is pleased to announce that Ken and Carol Gordon have agreed to lead us for this adult retreat. Ken and Carol provided the following information of their vision for the retreat:
We plan to talk about relationship history, provide some examples and discuss how to strengthen them. The sessions will be interactive; however the Friday evening session will be more individual work. Then we will build on that work throughout the weekend. An opening worship will begin each session using both contemporary and traditional music. Saturday afternoon will be free time for whatever the participants want to do. Camp Eder is beautiful at this time of the year.
We will be staying in the Tree of Peace lodge again this year. The Tree of Peace lodge has 8 motel-style rooms each containing one double bed, a set of bunk beds, a single trundle bed and a bathroom with a single shower. The lodge also has a full kitchen, and a spacious meeting room with a wood stove where all sessions will be held. Meals will be served in the Geigley Lodge, only a short walk away.
Plan to join your friends of First Church for this exciting, enriching time in retreat at Camp Eder. Sign up now to reserve your place. Registration fee of $90 per person includes five meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast) and two nights lodging in the Tree of Peace lodge at Camp Eder. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the narthex. While we encourage you to attend the entire weekend, day trippers or part-time attendees will be welcome. LOOKING AHEAD . . . . . . . . . . .
OCTOBER 5, 2016 THROUGH NOVEMBER 2, 2016 ~ W.E. GATHER ~ “I love to tell the story” this favorite hymn, number 398 in our hymnal, will be our theme for this fall’s WE Gather. You might guess from the title that the theme will be sharing stories from our faith journeys. Starting on Wednesday evening, October 5th and will continue the following dates Oct. 19th, Oct. 26th , and November 2nd. We will meet each Wednesday evening for a carry in supper starting at 6 and then a time of sharing starting at 7. We are looking for persons who are willing to share their faith stories. So look for the sign-up sheet in the narthex and pick a date. We have people signed up but we welcome more! Suggested Guidelines for sharing faith stories based on Hymn # 398 – “I Love to Tell the Story” 1) Satisfies my Longing (Jesus and his glory) 2) Some have never heard (the message of salvation) 3) For those who know it best (the old story made new because of God’s love). Start now thinking about how God has blessed you and been faithful to you in your journey through life.

Dolly Furst has made arrangements with SOPHIE to share her Pa Dutch humor with the OWLS on Thursday October 13 in the Homebuilders classroom 154 at noon. Bring your bag lunch.
